Doctor Pichai
Recently, when Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, along with his wife Anjali, received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, IIT Kharagpur, indeed, his cup of joy overflowed. “I was grateful to receive the doctorate from IIT Kharagpur,” Pichai enthused. “My parents always hoped I would get my doctorate, I think an honorary one still counts. The access to education and technology at IIT put me on a path to Google and helping more people access technology. IIT’s role in technology will only grow in importance with the AI revolution, and I will always be thankful for my time there,” he added. He also shared two pictures of himself receiving the honorary degree. Pichai was awarded the Doctor of Science (honoris causa) Award, while Anjali was honoured with the Distinguished Alumnus Award – at an event in San Francisco. “In recognition of his remarkable contribution towards digital transformation, affordable technology and path-breaking innovations, President Droupadi Murmu, visitor to the institute, had bestowed the degree to Pichai in absentia at the 69th Convocation of IIT Kharagpur in December last year,” the institute informed. “However, since Pichai could not be present at the annual convocation, the institute had reached out to him at a later date for the same. And, on 23 July, the felicitation was held in San Francisco”. After accepting the award, Pichai said, “This is indeed a great honour. I am truly blessed and humbled to receive this award.”
