Volvo EX90 launches in India: A new era of luxury electric SUVs begins

Volvo Car India has launched its flagship electric SUV, the EX90

Volvo Car India, the Indian arm of the Swedish luxury carmaker, entered the market in 2009. Over the years, the company has introduced several new and updated models for Indian customers. Today, it has expanded its sales and service network to 41 touchpoints across major metropolitan cities. Volvo will celebrate its centenary in 2027.

Chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand and Jyoti Malhotra, managing director of Volvo Car India, were present at the launch. Priced at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 1.26 crore, the EX90 is open for bookings, with customer experiences and test drives beginning in November 2026 and deliveries scheduled for January 2027. The company also officially teased the ES90, its all-electric luxury saloon, at the event. An introductory offer is available on bookings made before 31 December 2026, including an 11-kW wall-box charger and a three-year service package. Volvo Cars dealerships are also offering a 65 per cent buyback option after 3 years.

Anand will be the first customer to take delivery of the EX90. “Volvo brings to mind certain qualities. You think immediately of safety, reliability and luxury. I think there’s an underlying intelligence which manifests itself as confidence. So the moment you get into a Volvo, and you have that experience, it gives you a sense of that,” said Anand, describing his experience with Volvo Cars.

Designed as a spacious, luxurious 6-seater family SUV, the EX90 is Volvo’s first software-defined vehicle in the Indian market. It combines Scandinavian minimalist design, the company’s renowned safety standards, an impressive range and advanced technology, developed on Volvo’s new SPA2 platform.

“The launch of the EX90 is a major milestone in Volvo Car India’s commitment to a more electric, software-defined future. This flagship SUV also ushers in a new era of mobility with its exceptional comfort, technology and impressive range. We feel that it is the perfect luxury family SUV, offering peace of mind, putting safety at the forefront and delivering the best of Swedish luxury,” said Malhotra.

Built as Volvo’s smartest vehicle to date, the EX90 is powered by the NVIDIA DRIVE platform and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 cockpit technology. It features a 14.5-inch central touchscreen with an integrated Google ecosystem, including Google Maps, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and continuous over-the-air (OTA) updates. Its twin-motor setup is powered by a high-voltage 106 kWh lithium-ion battery. The EX90 offers a range of up to 625 km, with an ICAT-rated range of up to 725 km.

Safety always

Volvo Cars is renowned for its safety features. “We always start with safety. And when we talk about safety, we just don’t talk about some features or an add-on. For us, safety is our DNA. And when we are planning a car or when we’re looking at the design of the car, we think of safety beyond the occupant. It’s not about keeping the occupant safe; it goes much beyond. We look at the safety of the pedestrian. We look at the safety of the approaching car. But not just that; we think even beyond that, and that is where sustainability comes in,” explains Malhotra.

“We think about the safety of Mother Earth to keep all of us safe. And keeping that in mind, if you look at it, we are embracing the circular economy. We are looking at making our products more recyclable. We are using recyclable materials for our cars, and we even recycle our manufacturing waste,” he adds.

Volvo introduced the three-point safety belt in 1959, followed by a rear-facing child seat in 1972 and side-impact airbags in 1994. Over the years, it has also introduced a blind-spot information system, pedestrian detection with automatic braking, speed-limit technology and a multi-adaptive safety belt to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. The company claims to have saved more than a million lives and remains committed to developing new safety technologies.

For Volvo, its centenary represents not only a century of making cars safer but also a century of innovation and product excellence. When the company first entered India, it imported cars; it now has an assembly plant, a parts warehouse and an extensive customer network.

With the launch of the all-electric EX90, Volvo is expanding its presence in the fully electric segment. The company is also developing charging infrastructure through partnerships to provide customers with access to charging facilities. It currently has 49 chargers across India. With demand for luxury electric cars picking up, Volvo is preparing for the next phase of its electrification journey.
