Finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has stressed the importance of the role of technology in tackling climate change, calling for international cooperation to develop alternative energy and technology supply. The minister attended a virtual session of the G20 High-Level Tax Symposium on Tax Policy and Climate Change, which was sponsored by Italy ahead of the third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. The meeting is one of the ministerial meetings organised as part of the G20 Leaders Summit 2021, which will be hosted by Italy in October 2021. The G20 is made up of 19 countries and the European Union, and India is the only member from South Asia. Sitharaman emphasised in a series of tweets (which came from the Finance Ministry) that fiscal policy alternatives are employed in India for better environmental outcomes, and that concessional tax rates are in place to encourage the use of renewables. The finance minister also outlined India's unique policy mix for better environmental results, including the country's new energy map, digital innovation and emerging fuels, the International Solar Alliance for enabling clean energy, as well as energy efficiency and afforestation promotion.
